FROM INFLAMMATION TO WELLNESS – WENDY BLANCHARD, M.S., CHHC

Inflammation in the gut crosses the blood/brain barrier and suppresses healthy activity in the brain…causing depression. Depression is an inflammatory disorder…the consequence of inflammation and lifestyle choices such as sugar, processed foods, and gluten. Sugar, one of the most inflammatory substances that we ingest,  raises our blood sugar and triggers an immune response where it turns on inflammatory chemicals. Sugar causes anxiety. Sugar causes an increased risk in depression. Depression is known as “arthritis of the brain,” where it stops activating the frontal lobe/cortex which “controls important cognitive skills in humans, such as emotional expression, problem solving, memory, language, judgment, and sexual behaviors. It is, in essence, the “control panel” of our personality and our ability to communicate.”

To get back to homeostasis and wellness, healthy nutrition is key. Positive thoughts are key. Healthy relationships are key.

Everything that we put into our mouths either promote wellness, or inflammation. We need to pay attention to our food choices. Choose good healthy dietary fats that will lubricate the body, and the brain such as avocado oil, olive oil, coconut oil, nuts/seeds, as well as dark chocolate, and fatty fish. Healthy fat is your friend, and promotes wellness!

We now know that systemic inflammation in the gut is the root of depression. Inflammatory Cytokines (Cytokines are chemical messengers, essentially. … High levels of cytokines contribute to arthritis, atherosclerosis, and asthma. Many studies suggest these immune system messengers are released under conditions of psychological stress and resulting inflammation in the brain may contribute to depression and Cytokines are regulators of host responses to infection, immune responses, inflammation, and trauma) are produced in the gut where they enter the bloodstream and are absorbed from the gut to the blood. The blood carries it to the brain where it crosses the blood/brain barrier and suppresses the activity of the frontal cortex. The symptoms that suppression of the frontal cortex causes are the same as that of depression. Eating other foods such as berries, green tea, broccoli, mushrooms and grapes are wonderful anti inflammatory foods.

New research shows that depression is NOT caused by a chemical imbalance, although it can CAUSE a chemical imbalance. It is actually caused by inflammation in the gut equating to Neuro-inflammation.

We also know that our cells hear everything that we think. If we are constantly thinking negative thoughts, worrying, and living in fear, we now know that this causes inflammation on a cellular level. We need to practice mindfulness, meditation, prayer, positive affirmations, and standing in faith in whatever we believe guides us spiritually where we know that we are lovingly protected and guided in every moment. This can be God, Spirit, Angels, The Universe, Nature…whatever you connect to is what heals you.

And, it also rings true that toxic relationships that cause ongoing anxiety lead to ongoing depression…inflammation on a cellular level. So, when we are experiencing true joy, smiles, laughter, pure love that is felt in your heart, your soul, and in your body, and in your spirit, this is what promotes wellness…everlasting wellness is achieved through a holistic practice…body, mind, and spirit. And, IT IS ALWAYS A CONSCIOUS CHOICE.

If we carefully choose what we eat, what we think, and who we allow into our space, we make a conscious choice to practice self care, to achieve wellness, and to stand in our power. Our power is our wellness.
