“MUDDLING” THROUGH BASIL STRAWBERRY WATER – WENDY BLANCHARD, M.S., CHHC

I recently spent a beautiful afternoon with my dear friend of almost 20 years, Tara, and she introduced me to “muddling!”  Tara had heard the term but wasn’t sure how it worked, so we googled it! (of course!)

Tara watched as I “muddled” through my first recipe for strawberry/basil water! Tara brought strawberries with her and I had fresh basil from the farm, so we thought, “Why not?!” and I used these ingredients to make a yummy afternoon beverage. I used a rubber spatula to “muddle” the berries and basil. I have to buy a muddle! I added cold purified water and ice, and it was delicious and refreshing, and took just a minute to create!

The impressive polyphenolic and antioxidant properties of strawberries make them good for improving the immune system which, and this is our body’s first line of defense against infection and disease. Strawberries also contain a great amount of VItamin C which is also necessary for a healthy immune system, and is also known as an awesome “brain food” as the potassium, which is found in large amounts in strawberries, also has been linked to improved cognitive function by increasing the blood flow to the brain.

Basil has awesome health benefits due to its essential oils such as eugenol, citronellol, linalool, citral, limonene and terpineol. These compounds, research suggests, have anti inflammatory and anti bacterial properties! 100g of fresh basil leaves contain an incredible 175% of daily required allowance of Vitamin A which also has antioxidants, and is awesome in promoting healthy vision. Basil also has Vitamin K which promotes good bone health, and contains a good amount of minerals such as potassium, manganese, copper and magnesium, and is a wonderful source of iron. Iron helps to help keep oxygen flowing to our blood! So, start “muddling” your strawberries and basil! Cheers!
