HOMEMADE FLU SHOTS! – WENDY BLANCHARD, M.S.

I began feeling like I was coming down with a respiratory infection, or maybe even the flu. I used what I had in the house to make a homemade “flu shot” to relieve my symptoms. As a student at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, I have learned so much as to which natural ingredients can heal a variety of symptoms, and/or illnesses, so I went to work in the kitchen.

The ingredients, which are all natural and/or organic are as follows:

  • 3 organic garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2-3 T. natural honey
  • 1/2 tsp organic turmeric
  • 3 Tbsps grated organic ginger (I used 2-2″ pieces of ginger)
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp organic cayenne pepper
  • 3 cups organic apple juice
  • 1/4 cup organic freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup organic freshly squeezed lime juice

I crushed the garlic and ginger in my food processor, and then added all of the ingredients together. It is actually delicious, and I feel like it helped the moment I began to drink my homemade remedy!

Garlic uses include treatment of fever, coughs, headache, stomach ache, sinus congestion, and helps fight fatigue. Turmeric is a natural anti-inflammatory. Ginger “warms the body, flushes toxins out of our system, boosts our immune system, instantly energizes us and can ease our nerves.” It is also an anti inflammatory, pain reliever, and has anti bacterial properties. Cayenne can aid in the treatment of aches and pains of the muscles and joints that can be associated with the flu. Apple juice boosts the immune system among many other benefits, lemon offers vitamin C and vitamin B, and also relieves respiratory problems, just to name a few benefits, and lime gives relief from congestion and nausea, and offers a variety of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Honey naturally suppresses coughs, aids sleep, boosts immunity, and more. Did you know that in raw honey there are phytonutrients that have antiviral and antibacterial properties that may help fight sickness and also boost your immune system? Who knew?

So, enjoy my new homemade flu remedy, get lots of rest, drink lots of water as well, and some good homemade chicken soup! Self love and self care are even more important when you are not feeling well, so take good care!

To your good health!
