As I have been fighting a fever and infection the past couple of days, I have been using all of my “organic tools” in my natural tool belt to heal, and have learned that it is better not to reduce a fever. Having a fever is part of the body’s natural way of fighting illness or infection, so reducing the fever can, in fact, prolong the illness, as it lets the cause of the illness live for a longer time.

Fever is a natural response to infection or illness. Many illnesses flourish at normal body temperature, and a fever (even a high one) is indicative that the immune system is functioning to fight off the infection. Actually, a fever is a good sign because it means that the body is responding to fight the infection, and in most cases, it is part of a natural bodily response that should be allowed to continue. Patience in healing naturally and organically is key. Given half a chance, the body can heal itself, and during this process, the fever and infection will dissipate as the body heals. Fever can be caused by bacterial or viral illness, or sometimes from environmental factors.

Also, most traditional methods of reducing a fever can do more harm than good. Tylenol and Advil (the two medications most often given to reduce fever) both have side effects and cause liver failure in adults and children each year, especially when given regularly. Medications are also foreign substances in the body, which must be metabolized and filtered by the body and this takes energy the body could be using to fight the illness. I believe that using information like our blood type, ancestry and metabolism is vital in understanding our bio-individuality and finding ways to heal naturally with whole food that is plant based, using supplements and homeopathy that are plant based, and essential oils which are also my go to for balance of physical, emotional and spiritual health.

While I’ve been fighting my fever and infection, it has been somewhat uncomfortable, but I have been able to find holistic solutions to feel balanced and at ease. Please keep in mind that sometimes medical intervention and medicine are absolutely warranted, however, they are not my first line of defense for most fevers or illness.

I recommend using peppermint essential oil to alleviate aches and pains, and to rid the mucous that comes with a cold or flu. Rub the oil on the bottom of your feet, and the back of your neck, and you can also place an ice pack on your neck or over your eyes to manage the fever and headache that might accompany your symptoms. I also rub peppermint oil on my temples for fever and headache, close my eyes in a comfy position with the ice pack covering my eyes. So amazingly comforting.

I found it very helpful to use Epson salt mixed with peppermint essential oil, lavender essential oil, and chamomile essential oil in a warm bath. Peppermint works like an anti-inflammatory, with lavender and chamomile, and help to promote relaxation, stress relief and relief of aches and pains. Rub your skin with Epson salt bath water to open pores to allow the oils to penetrate, allowing the infection to filter out through the pores. I felt invigorated after my healing bath, and my aches and pains were almost entirely gone. And, my fever was less than it was before my bath. To clear mucous from the chest and head, put peppermint oil or Eucalyptus oil on a cotton ball and inhale through each nostril about three times each while closing the opposite nostril with your finger. Rub either oil into your chest for a warm, penetration of the oils that help to reduce phlegm and mucous, and opening up of the air passages.

In addition, I have been drinking much more than half my weight in ounces as I do as a daily practice. I want to flush out the infection which will also naturally and organically reduce the fever. Here are some other suggestions that I use as my first line of defense when I am fighting an illness/fever, and remember to eat only whole foods that are organic…organic plant based foods and supplements are always best for flushing the toxins from our bodies….and water, water, water!

1.  Young Living Inner Defense Capsules for immune support- or ImmunoTix supplement which supports the body’s defenses against cold, flu and infection, and supports healthy immune function.

2.  Homemade “Flu Shots” –
3.  At least half your weight in ounces of water, but add about 32 oz. more when fighting infection and fever and add lemon and/or lime for Vitamin C.
4.  Drink Green tea, Peppermint tea, or Chamomile tea. I also like to make a warm lemon water with a pinch of Cayenne Pepper that is therapeutic. This regimen helps to stimulate the liver, the body’s primary detoxing organ, and kick-starts the digestive system where disease begins. Your liver releases uric acid and creates bile to safely eliminate toxins. Keeping your liver and digestive system clean and healthy also helps prevent chronic disease.
5.  Eat homemade chicken vegetable soup made with organic ingredients that are whole foods. This nourishes and provides nutrients that aid in healing and is so comforting.
6.  Small doses of coconut oil mixed into food or smoothies for its antibacterial and antiviral properties. I also do an oil pulling with coconut oil. Put a small amount of coconut oil into your mouth and gently swish all around your mouth for about 15-20 minutes to rid bacteria. Spit out into the garbage when you are done so it doesn’t clog your drain!
7.  Keep in mind that all illness originates in the gut, so it is IMPERATIVE to take probiotics, especially during illness to support gut and immune health. Add to smoothies, soups or tea when using a powdered form.
8.  If you are having trouble resting comfortably or unable to sleep, I recommend my Chai Tea!
9.  To disinfect your home to avoid spreading germs, try diffusing Thieves essential oil which is a powerful antibacterial. Add some Joy or Lavender essential oil for further feelings of relaxation while you are resting.
10. Use 1 clove of raw, organic garlic minced, every few hours for adults. (If pregnant, no more than 1 clove per day)
11.  Use 1 teaspoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in 8 oz of water every couple of hours during illness. ACV works both as an internal and external health tonic. For digestive issues and to promote digestion, I take 2 teaspoons every morning before breakfast.
12. Use my Turmeric Milk recipe to help soothe you during illness and to promote healing of inflammation.
13. Use a Rice Pack for relieving aches, chills and fever from flu or illness – You will need:
about 5 lbs of white rice, old socks or pieces of flannel, pillow cases, old sheets that are approximately 12″ squares, thread, and a sewing needle. You can also make one pack by using a smaller amount of rice, and follow directions below. This recipe makes a few natural hot packs.
Next, if you are using squares, fold the material in half with right sides together and sew two of the sides so that three sides are closed and the smaller end is left open. If it is folded, sew the bottom and the long side so that it becomes a tube that is roughly 12 inches by six inches with one six inch side open. Turn material inside out so that the rough edges are hidden and fill with rice until it is about 2/3 full. Fold the remaining side in so that the rough ends are hidden and sew closed. If using a tube sock, fill the sock about 2/3 full and sew closed about 1″ from the top. Rice expands so leave enough room in the sock and inside of the squares.
To use the pack, heat in the microwave on high for 60 seconds or until desired temperature. I NEVER use the microwave for anything, but here I make an exception so that I may reheat and use. You may store in fridge or at room temp. Stays warm for about one hour.

Please note that for the most part, a fever is a natural and even healthy response that should be given the opportunity to run its course. However, there are exceptions, and in these cases, it is important to seek medical care to make sure there is not a more serious problem. Don’t hesitate to seek medical help immediately if the situation warrants it.

In general, these are the times I would seek out medical care for a fever, but a parent’s intuition/research and conversation with your own doctor are important for determining when a fever is serious. I seek help when:
-The ill person has symptoms such as stiff neck, listlessness, or sensitivity to light
-The person is unable to hold down food for more than a few hours or showing any signs of dehydration
-A child under three months has a fever over 100.4 or exhibits any serious symptoms, i.e. convulsions, listlessness, etc.
-A child has a fever over 104 as this can be indicative of a more serious infection or some type of poisoning
-A child has a fever for more than two successive days
-Seek immediate help if the person is in respiratory distress
-The person has been exposed to toxins or poisons that may be responsible for causing the fever
